I’ve worked at a place where we could only access 2 sites. Our own and NPR. That's right. NPR.
We did however find a loophole. On the NPR site (and you can try this yourself) if you searched for in quotations "lionel blue" -or Danni has informed me that “dig hole china sandwich” worked as well, but I digress- “lionel blue” leads you to a blog post from March 9, 2009 called ‘My New Band and Album’ (it’s actually pretty cool if you take a look) anywho we were able to press the link titled “this tool” for wikipedia. From wikipedia we could look up ‘google’ and on that page there was a link for google.com. Ha, instant internet!!!
Even where I currently work there are strict security blockers that greatly limits the places in which I go.
-No gaming sites, meaning I can’t play pogo or addicting games but also I can’t read the article about the ending of ME3 that I wanted either because it was still considered a ‘gaming’ site.
-No social media pages: meaning no facebook or…is there any others? I mean I don’t think I’ve been to my ‘myspace’ page for years. Oh and Live Journal don’t make me laugh ha ha ha that one week of freshman year of college was more cyberdrama that I’ve ever been involved with in my entire life. And I know I can hear some of you yelling Twitter. No. ok Yes some celebs and even your friends have funny things to say but If I can’t stand you telling me what you had for dinner on facebook, why would I want to know what you had for dinner in 140 characters or less.
-No personal sites - even as I write this on my Microsoft Word at work, I can not read nor post to blogger until I get home.
=> Sidebar. I do my job, and I do it well so don’t think that I don’t, there’s just a lot of hurry up and wait moments okay?
-No videos. This doesn’t mean just youtube which I believe would fall under the social media venue, but any video. I don’t have administrative rights to download the correct adobe flash player to watch news reels and whatnot on the sites I am allowed to go on.
-No Ebay nor craigslist.
So I therefore find happiness and some sense of ‘damn the man’ when I find a site I can go on.
Gmail - I must check my Email every half hour. Odannigirl keeps me entertained.
IMDb and Wikipedia – these sites define what it is to ‘surf’ the internet. -Not that I do- but I could get lost for hours. Just jumping from one thing to another. Not to mention they’re a lifesaver when you have the overpowering need to find an answer to let’s say What was the Mark Wahlberg penis movie called? What is a Dugong? The meaning behind Humpty Dumpty? they are always there.
Google Search - Granted I can’t always go to the websites it suggests but sometimes the three sentence preview is all I need to answer things like How do you correctly spell definately definatly definantly definetly definently defiantly definitely? What was the song they were listening to in the car in Chronicle? Why are polish and Polish spelled the same?
Amazon- Why this and not ebay. Not sure. The IT firewall builders are an elusive lot.
And most recently I’ve discovered I can access my Pottermore. [Go Gryffindor! PixieWalnut30586 if you want to be wizard friends.] How this is not a social media/gaming site I don’t know, magic I suppose. It’s awesome except perhaps for it’s damn near impossible to balance my muggle job and potions class. Which brings me to my point. > Why can’t I explain to my boss that he has to wait 5 more minutes so I can finish brewing my sleeping drought so I can help Gryffindor win the house cup? It’s a valid point! I think I shall tell him. Umm Maybe not. My tea leaves weren't promising today. Aw crap there goes another cauldron.
There’s a right side, a wrong side, and my side
